Wilpattu β Mannar β Jaffna (Drive)
Enjoy a satisfying breakfast at your hotel before checking out. We’ll then transfer you from Wilpattu to Mannar. Upon arrival in Mannar, delve into history with a visit to Arippu Dutch Fort. This small, two-bastion fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese, later passed to the Dutch in 1658, and subsequently to the British. It served various roles, including housing officials managing the area’s renowned pearl fisheries.
Next, explore the spiritual richness of the region with a visit to Thiruketheeswaram Temple, one of Sri Lanka’s five Sivan temples. Here, you’ll find a colossal Sivalingam sculpted from granite, unearthed by archaeologists in the 1950s after being buried during the Portuguese invasion of Mannar in the 16th century. The temple, once in ruins, was meticulously restored to its former grandeur during the British colonial era, with significant contributions from Jaffna’s Hindu community.
Afterward, we’ll transfer you from Mannar to Jaffna. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel and unwind at your own pace. Enjoy a comfortable overnight stay in Jaffna, ensuring a serene end to your day of exploration and cultural immersion.
Jaffna
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel. Afterwards, immerse yourself in the cultural richness of Jaffna with a visit to Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, located about 3km from Jaffna town on the KKS (Kankasanthurai) Road. This temple holds immense historical significance, dating back to the reign of King Parakramabahu VI of the Kotte Kingdom. It was built by Prince Sapumal, who later became the regional ruler of Jaffna, after successfully defending the area against South Indian invaders.
Next, explore the impressive Jaffna Fort, the second largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka, situated just south of Jaffna town along the shores of Jaffna Lagoon. Originally built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch, this fort has played a pivotal role in the region’s history, as documented by Dutch pastor Phillipus Baldaeus in the 17th century.
Continue your journey to the northernmost point of Sri Lanka, Point Pedro, where a historic lighthouse marks the spot. Nearby, explore Velvettiturai, known for its historical significance as a hub for local smugglers and a landing point for illegal immigrants from South India. Visit Vallipuram, a village just south of Point Pedro, renowned for its ancient Vallipuram gold foil inscriptions and the second largest Hindu Kovil in Sri Lanka dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
After a day filled with exploration and discovery, return to your hotel in Jaffna for a comfortable overnight stay, reflecting on the rich tapestry of history and culture you’ve experienced throughout the day.
